There are different versions about the meaning of the word Taxco. The most widely accepted affirms that it comes from the Nahuatl word tlacheco. It was composed of two elements: “tlacht” – name of the ball game, and the “co” – a place. They together translate as “Place where ball is played”. There is also talk of Talchcotelapa, which means “place to play ball.” Another version comes from tatzco, it means “where the father of water is” because it is located on the slopes of the Atatzin hill. The place where the beautiful city of Taxco is located today was formerly called Tetelcingo by the Indians. By the end of the 16th century, the current population was made up of five neighborhoods, which have also been referred to as “five towns”: Tetelcingo, Acayotla, Tlacncotecapa, the Convent and Cantarranas. During the War of Independence, Taxco witnessed important acts.
